Birthday by ~oalicein:iconoalicein:

1.
everything is
inadequate, and
i want my money back.

2.
today is the
day that
i turn twelve years old.
my mother
tells me that i'm turning
into a handsome young man.
my father says fine young lad.

today you are
coming over to my
house for cake. you are
lactose-intolerant,
but you put up with your
reaction to make me happy.

you are thirteen
years old and you're
the youngest in your grade
at school. but you
are every boy's
mother, and every
girl's sister.
i am always
following you around;
you never mind.

it is night time. and
there is a small plane on
the horizon flying
through the darkness,
a light flashing;
you pointed this out.
you pointed this out
with my hand with your hair
brushing my hair
when i couldn't see by myself.

it is quiet and cool
and our minds are still
stupid; we talk about
solipsism and colours
and all your allergies.
we talk about your house
and your cat and my shoes
and photography and
soccer and bicycles.

and i am so scared your
mother will come and take you away.
i am so scared you are
going to disappear.

this has to be one of the most beautiful verses ever written
:iconpseudometry:
The first section is a brilliant opener. I like how it sets the tone, as we come through the second stanza and are led past the irrelevant details of the day to her intentions and gestures and words and person, and then I stop and think back and wonder of the inadequacy of the presents and perfunctory parental interaction isn't another effect of the nature of this girl.
You could overtly say, she was amazing and everything else that night was so insignificant by comparison. But this works much better, to my mind. And I agree with the above comment too re: that particular verse, especially the understated power of the hand and hair touching.
